Water, essential to all life on Earth and the most abundant compound on the planet, is also one of the most misunderstood and confusing resources, says Kevin Worsfold, president of One Water Systems in Oceanside, a provider of water filtration systems for home and commercial uses.Armed with a can-do attitude and guided by a strong desire to help consumers achieve better quality of life through healthy, clean and bacteria-free water, Worsfold founded his company in 2006 to distribute One Water Systems whole-home water filtration units to customers throughout California. Worsfold chose the units, manufactured by a company in Arizona for the past 21 years, because of the product's consistently top performance over time.
"We all know there is contamination in water, but the public in America is not as informed about it's poor quality as it should be" Worsfold said. "Otherwise there would be mass hysteria. We take it for granted it's good but unfortunately it's not." In January, the website 24/7 Wall St counted San Diego ninth among it's list of 10 American cities with the worst water, based on data collected over a five year period ending in 2009 by the Environmental Working Group (E.W.G) in Washington D.C. The report stated that according to the California Department of Public Health, the city's drinking water system contained 20 contaminants, including eight that exceeded the EPA's legal limit.
As described by Worsfold, the One Water Systems filtration device treats and conditions water before it enters any pipe in the home, using computer-controlled low voltage, high frequency electronic impulses instead of salts, leaving water softer, less corrosive with no residual pollution. Contaminants such as pesticides, solvents, volatile organic compounds (V.O.C.'s) which leach in through porous concrete pipes buried underground are filtered out using granular activated carbon. Chlorine which is added to water to kill bacteria, is also removed.
Unlike other filtration methods such as reverse osmosis and ion exchange, Worsfold said the One Water's method does not remove essential minerals, which he admitted may be good in bottling water for long periods of time, but not so good for humans to consume in large amounts.
"Demineralized water will kill a goldfish or a plant," Worsfold said. As a choice for health, I don't think it's a good decision."
Oscar Sarkisian, founder of Pat & Oscar's Restaurant, purchased a One Water filtration system for his home and has persuaded many of his neighbors to do the same, Sarkisian said that he enjoys being able to take a shower without absorbing chlorine through his skin, and that he can get great tasting water from any faucet in his house.
"Unlike bottled water, which is nothing but tap water, it's chemical-free and good for my health." Sarkisian said. "Plus I get all of the good nutrients, and the filter stays for many years without having to be touched."
Worsfold said he is so confident the One Water filtration system is the best of its kind at producing the finest-quality, healthiest water of any technology that he will pay $5,000 if any company can prove to be better. Worsfold added that as part of the One Water Systems' "No if, ands, or buts," 10-year unlimited, no-nonsense guarantee, the company will come out once a year to inspect every machine and test the water.
"There aren't going to be any restrictions, and it covers every particle of carbon, component and workable issue that the machine is capable of performing." said Worsfold. "We assure that the machine will continue to work as it was from day one.
